General FAQs
What is a Download2Go kiosk?
Download2Go kiosks are easy to use, self-service digital download “stations” or kiosks you can use to buy or rent digital movies and TV programs in GreenPlay format. You can quickly search thousands of movies and TV shows, preview trailers, and in one click, add your selections for purchase or rental to a shopping cart. The content quickly downloads to portable Secure Digital (SD) memory cards and can be played on any Windows PC and a growing number of consumer electronics devices at home or on the go – no Internet connection needed.
Where are the Download2Go kiosks located?
You will find Download2Go digital download kiosks in a growing number of retail and public locations – places where you already shop and visit, such as retail and convenience stores, airports, train stations, and coffee shops, making it convenient and hassle-free to purchase digital entertainment content when you’re on the go. And unlike physical media like DVDs, digital movies you rent from a Download2Go kiosk don’t have to be returned to the store when you’re finished watching – they simply expire.
How do I know if it’s a Download2Go kiosk?
To ensure you're getting the high-quality content in the GreenPlay format, look for self-service kiosks with the Download2Go and GreenPlay logos. These kiosks are the only ones that allow you to purchase or rent movies and TV programs on SD memory cards.
What type of content can I find at a Download2Go kiosk?
There are thousands of movie titles and hundreds of TV programs in the GreenPlay format available from the Download2Go kiosk, with new titles added every day. The catalog contains new release movies as well as older and harder to find movies and TV programs, both full seasons and episodes, from major and independent studios. And because they’re digital, the supply is limitless so titles are never out of stock. Currently, GreenPlay is only available for video content, but will include video games in the future.
Do all the kiosks have the same content?
Retailers can choose what video content they offer in their Download2Go kiosks so you may find a slight variance in the content available at each location. However, the vast majority of the kiosks include the same movies and TV programs, and since the content is updated daily, you’ll always find new, interesting content and not leave empty handed.
Do I need a special SD card? Can I use the SD card from my digital camera?
You can download movies and TV programs from the Download2Go kiosk to any SD flash memory card, including the one used in your digital camera, provided it has enough available capacity to hold the content – typically about 2GB for a 2-hour movie, 1GB for a 1-hour TV program and 512MB for a 30-minute TV program. However for the fastest download times and adequate capacity, we recommend a minimum of a 4GB, Class 4 SDHC card.
How long does it take to download a full-length movie from a Download2Go kiosk?
At digital download self-service kiosks, video files load to SD cards very quickly. Full-length movies typically download in about 2 minutes, a half-hour TV program in 30 seconds. This is in stark contrast to typical Internet download times of 60-90 minutes or more for a full-length movie due to limited bandwidth.
Is the download speed the same for all SD cards or are some faster than others?
While all Class 4 or higher SD cards are compatible with a Download2Go kiosk, the speed with which the kiosk can download movies to the cards varies. In general, the more expensive the card, the faster it can be written. The fastest cards can typically download a 2-hour movie in about 2 minutes. A slow card may take 3-5 minutes. However card speed is only a consideration for movie downloads, not playback. All Class 4 or higher SD cards are fast enough to play the movie on a GreenPlay-compatible playback device.
How many movies from a Download2Go kiosk can fit on an SD card?
SD card capacity can be very large, allowing you to fit several movies on one card, making it even more convenient to load and go. For example: if you have an 8GB card, you can typically fit at least 3 full-length movies on it. Remember, SD flash memory cards are reusable and can be refilled so they’re extremely economical, and ecological.
Do I buy it or rent the video content from a Download2Go kiosk?
You can rent or buy movies and TV programs in GreenPlay format from the Download2Go digital download kiosks. With rentals, you have 30 days from purchase to start watching the movie, and 48 hours to watch once you begin for most titles. Some titles are limited to 24 hours to watch – similar to cable VOD systems and Internet services like iTunes. The rental terms are displayed on details page on the kiosk screen for each title, so you’ll know the terms before you rent. The digital files “expire” automatically, so there’s no need to return the content to the store when you’re done watching. But you will want to delete the files from your SD card to free up space for new content. When you buy the digital files, they are yours to keep.
How much does it cost to download a movie from a Download2Go kiosk?
Movie rental and purchase prices from the digital download kiosks are consistent with online digital downloads and in-store rentals today. For instance, new release rentals are typically $3.99, and older titles $2.99; however, you may find some variance in the prices and content available at each kiosk location.
How do I pay? Debit card, cash, PayPal account?
Using a Download2Go digital download kiosk is just like using any other kind of self-service kiosk. You simply swipe your credit card. You can also request the receipt be forwarded to your email account so it’s fast, streamlined and paperless.
How are Download2Go kiosks different than downloading movies from the Internet?
With Download2Go kiosks “dispensing” movies and TV shows in the GreenPlay format, you have faster, easier, and more flexible options for playing entertainment choices while you are on the go. Not only are they located at convenient retail locations where you already shop– perfect for those last minute impulse purchases, the movie/TV content you rent or purchase can be “detached” or separated from the playback device. You can take the video content on the SD card and enjoy it wherever you go--on whatever device is convenient.
Where can I play the movies I rent or buy from a Download2Go kiosk?
GreenPlay formatted movies and TV shows from a Download2Go kiosk can play on consumer electronics devices that have a secure SD memory card reader and have GreenPlay-compatible firmware (this is software the manufacturer embeds in devices in order to control it.) Manufacturers are currently adding these hardware and software upgrades to their devices in order to play content in GreenPlay format, so be sure to check the list of products on www.greenplay.net for the most up-to-date list of compatible devices. Today you can play the movies/TV shows on any Windows PC when used with a GreenPlay SD Card Reader or on any TV with an attached GreenPlay Digital Media Player – both of which are available for sale by the Download2Go kiosks. There are also some PCs that can play the content using the built-in SD reader; these devices will have a GreenPlay-compatible logo.
How is the quality of the movies/shows I download from a Download2Go kiosk?
Movies and TV shows downloaded from a Download2Go kiosk are very sharp and clear. With full-screen playback and compelling state-of-the-art graphics throughout menu selections, the visual quality is as good as, or better, than DVD quality.
Do I need an Internet connection?
The video file and content keys required for playback are stored on the SD card so your device doesn’t have to be connected to the Internet in order to play – you have the freedom to play it in more locations, on more devices. Since the video plays directly from an SD card, there are no frustrating buffering pauses often associated with streaming video. The movies appear onscreen immediately (no delays!).
What controls do I have while watching the movies/TV shows I’ve downloaded?
There are advanced onscreen display controls during playback, including all navigation -- pause, resume, stop, start, skip forward or backward through the chapters, as well as the ability to move, save, and delete your selections from your SD card. You can also peruse all the movie details onscreen, including preview images, actors, directors, synopsis, and ratings.
