MOD Systems Debuts Video Solution to Japanese Retail Market

Toshiba and NCR Corporation Demonstrate MOD’s Digital Media Delivery Solution to Japan’s Largest Retailers at Retailtech Japan 2009
March 3rd, 2009 - Retailtech Japan 2009 Tokyo

MOD Systems Incorporated, an industry-leading provider of digital media delivery systems for retailers, today announced that the MOD Retail Enterprise System will be showcased at Japan's largest retail IT and supply chain event: Retailtech Japan 2009 in Tokyo (Booth #RT1107). The Japanese subsidiary of NCR Corporation and Toshiba Corporation will jointly demonstrate the MOD Systems® solution for secure digital video downloads to SD memory cards with instant playback on a dedicated SD card player.

The MOD Systems solution is part of an initiative by MOD Systems, NCR, and Toshiba to give consumers a faster, more portable way to download movies, TV shows, music and other digital content at a wide variety of retail locations for playback on various consumer electronics devices. MOD Systems expects to launch its digital video download solution in 2009 at select retail locations in the United States. Retail deployments in international markets are expected to follow.

"For too long digital media delivery to consumers has been a direct-to-home model, leaving physical retailers out of the equation," said Mark E. Phillips, CEO of MOD Systems. "We're very pleased to work with our partners to debut this solution to retailers in Japan. We think this mobile consumer market presents a tremendous opportunity to deliver digital entertainment using SD cards, a highly portable form factor."

The MOD Retail Enterprise System handles all aspects of securing, ingesting, and fulfilling digital content in retail stores. The end-to-end system enables retailers to create an engaging experience for consumers, allowing them to quickly and easily buy content in a format that's portable and multi-device compatible. MOD Systems' open platform, which has been deployed with leading global retailers, supports all content types and distribution scenarios including manufacturing-on-demand, delivery in optical or digital format, and hybrid online and in-store systems.

MOD Systems' growing entertainment catalog includes nearly 4,000 video titles from independent and major studios, and nearly 4 million music tracks. In January 2009, MOD Systems announced the first major U.S. studio agreements to distribute digital video from Warner Brothers and Paramount Digital Entertainment via downloads to SD cards in retail stores.

"Digital distribution enables consumers to make customized purchases from a virtual inventory that's never out of stock," said Michele Macpherson, vice president of entertainment, NCR. "With the MOD Systems solution and NCR self service kiosks, retailers can optimize their retail footprint and cost effectively extend their brand into new environments, like malls, convenience stores, train stations and airports."
