MOD Systems, a leading provider of retail digital media delivery technology, today announced Warren Lieberfarb has joined MOD Systems' board of directors as vice chairman. Lieberfarb, widely recognized within the entertainment industry as the “father of the DVD,” is the former president of Warner Home Video where he spent more than twenty years guiding Warner Home Video to become the premier video software company in the world. As vice chairman, Lieberfarb will take an active role driving MOD Systems′ DVD strategy for retail enterprises.
MOD Systems is doing some exciting work with digital entertainment distribution and I’m very pleased to take an active role in their video strategy, said Warren Lieberfarb, chairman of Warren N. Lieberfarb & Associates LLC (WNLA). The pieces are quickly coming together for retailers to provide customers’ with access to an in-store inventory of DVDs complemented by a much larger digital catalog delivered via on demand in-store DVD burning or directly to a portable device.
Warren’s involvement with MOD is both an honor and an incredible opportunity, said Anthony Bay, chairman of MOD Systems. We believe his vision about how technology can create new ways for consumers to access and enjoy entertainment content, combined with his ability to completely revitalize and move an industry, will help retailers capitalize on the potential of digital video distribution and maintain their role in the value chain.
Father of the DVD
Lieberfarb is widely recognized within the entertainment industry as the “father of the DVD” for his role at Warner Home Video where he drove the conceptualization, development and successful worldwide implementation of the DVD, a product that has transformed the home video industry. While at Warner Home Video, Lieberfarb had the initial vision for a high-quality, convenient, affordable, digital/optical media for home entertainment. It was this initial vision that evolved into today’s DVD, a single format that has been accepted by the consumer electronics, computer and entertainment industries.
In 2002, five years after its introduction, the DVD generated worldwide consumer revenues for both hardware and software of over $30 billion. This achievement makes it the most successful consumer electronics product launch in history. Today, DVD represents nearly half of the entire global revenues of the motion picture industry, and is by far the leading source of the rapid growth the industry has enjoyed over the past four years. DVD has also been credited with reviving the consumer electronics business.
In recognition of his unique role in creating the DVD, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences presented Lieberfarb with an Emmy Award in 1999. In 2002, Lieberfarb was named the first recipient of the Wharton/Infosys “Technology Change Agent” award. In 2003, Lieberfarb received from the Minister of Culture and Communications of the Republic of France the “Legion of Arts and Letters,” the Cannes Film Festival “Medal du Festival,” and the “MIPCOM DVD Lifetime Achievement Award” for his leading role in making DVD both an artistic and commercial success.
